Moments Between
Paintings of everyday life in Lancaster
Why Moments Between
For most of us, life is lived in the spaces between destinations. We wait for buses, stand on station platforms, cross familiar streets and pass strangers that we will never meet again. These moments are so ordinary that they often go unnoticed.
Moments Between began as a way of paying attention to these fleeting fragments of everyday life. By slowing them down through paint, I hope to reveal something quietly remarkable in places we think we already know.
Working almost exclusively in Lancaster, I’m drawn to the city’s changing light, its warm sandstone, expansive skies and the rhythm of people moving through it. Each painting captures a moment that existed for only a few seconds, yet speaks to experiences that are shared by all of us.
This is an ongoing series that continues to grow, one observed moment at a time
Moments Between in the Studio
Artists Statement
Moments Between explores the fleeting, often overlooked spaces of Lancaster. Commutes, bus stops, side streets, the early morning light and the late night journey home. These are the places we move through every day but rarely stop to see. I love this city. Its warm stone, dramatic skies and ever changing weather. Its’ streets layered with history and character. Most of all, I love its people. This series is my attempt to capture those people within the streets that I know and love. Sometimes isolated, sometimes together, they are passing from one place to another, each carrying a story of their own.
Waiting for a train, standing at a bus stop, heading to work or catching up on the Town Hall steps. These are fleeting moments as both we and the city move by. They interest me because they reveal a city in transit, yet they are also places where people are briefly forced to pause and simply be.
Some places only exist for the moments between.
