Pause

Oil painting showing people waiting for the bus in the alcoves of Stop C. A couple are passing, reflected in the glass bus stop canopy above. Traffic is moving by, with the town hall in the distance.

At the edge of the pavement, beneath a vast and restless sky, people wait. Some walk on, while others linger in the shadows of the bus stop, half hidden and slightly out of focus, as though already slipping between one place and the next. Their stories are unknown but for a few minutes they share something. They can go nowhere.

I’ve always been drawn to these places of waiting. Bus stops, train platforms and departure lounges are spaces of temporary stillness, where the rush of life briefly gives way to reflection. Pause is a painting about that suspension.
